Broken key ?

Post by pacHa »

Hi

I've recently bought a ti83+se on ebay, a brand new one though (with its blister).
The problem is, it has always worked fine, but the other day, when running CrunchyOS, the program list was quickly scrolling, as if the
key was kept down...
I coudn't turn it off, so I removed the batteries.
After this, it was sometimes doing the same in the TI-OS's prog list and home screen, but somtimes it was ok, but these times both Bubble (app version) and CrunchyOS were reacting like if the key was down.
I first thought there was some water under the key, that was closing the circuit...but I've let my calc next to heat for a whole night, and it's still te same... Even worse, in the TI-OS it's always stuck...

Any idea guys ?
Could it be a software-related issue ? I don't think so...
What about the guarantee ?

Maybe not water, but something sticky. Can you take it apart and clean out the key?

Key, I'd open it and get busy with mild cleaning agent. Some soap and warm water can be your ticket out of a sticky situation.
My diet consists of nails, code-stealers, and HP fans.

I spilled acetone on my calculator once. It didn't appreciate that too much.

Well that's strange... I managed yesterday to have the key unstuck by hitting it strongly, but sometimes it re-appears... And I didn't managed to open the calc since I don't own a 'star' tool (sorry I don't know the exact word for the tool)...I guess I'll have to find one

It's a torx 5 or a torx 6 (can't remember the actual gauge). Just take your calculator to a hardware shop and hunt around until you find one that fits, or just ask :)

I believe the word is "screwdriver". Probably a phillip's head screwdriver if the screw is shaped like this: +.

Torx are a specific type of head, some people call them security screws. They look like a star sort of. Older calcs are phillips head, newer ones are torx.

Yeah, you might say with torx heads there, you're screwed. Walmart and maybe Hobby Lobby have kits for them. Both overpriced, but that's the cheapest I can think of.

I bought my set at Home Depot, which was $16 USD, and it came with 20 different bits including flathead, philleps, torx, and hex.
