I have a broad definition about sports, but if rock climbing is a sport, or swiming, than so is running.

Of course. I'm not doing it, so it must be sport. ;)

I meant it in the terms of there is very little that can give you an advantage over anyone else. Shoes are about it... 99.9% of Cross Country is about how good you are, not how good your team or equipment is.

duh! high school track&field teams.. hello? its even on the OLYMPICS!

10 pound shoes with cheap equipment such as wrong size clothes, and real thick clothing that heats up real well... against 0.5 pound shoes with proper, lightweight clothes.... equipment MATTERS

and also sports drinks are some factors between winners and losers. gatorade actually puts back things you lose like sodium chloride, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen... water only puts back oxygen and hydrogen so their food also determines it..

how do i know? cause i run track and at any given moment i can run a mile in 7...

It's a sport, but a VERY boring one to watch or perform. Even more bring than Golf i'd say :)

You guys wouldn't believe how many other athletes at my hs think running is a sport for losers who aren't talented enough to play other sports.

From my experience, running isn't just talent, though it really helps. Knowing how to train is a big part and it can really turn you into a hyperefficient beast.

As for shoes, it's often important to know your foot before buying any. And avoiding protein packed food before a run is often a good idea. Salty foods are actually good because they help you absorb the liquids you're drinking.

btw, i don't run XC anymore but i learned a lot about running during my experience. (i probably can't run an 8 minute mile now; before best record on a 2-mile was 13:02, not very talented)
