If you still use a computer that's that old, put Linux on it. Week-old kernel but it'll still run fine. :)

I agree with Andy on that point :P .
Linux even works on 1mb Video Card, 64 RAM, 8 gigabyte harddrive and 200mhz CPU.

As for the X700 its for the PCI-X. So no luck for me :P

Well, Linux works on low specs- so long as you don;t go for Fedora Core 4. I recommend Ubuntu (Debian main is great too) or Slackware, or if you feel brave, go with Gentoo.

I'd go for a 6600GT or a 6800, probably just with 128mb. I think they both come in AGP. There's not much point getting anything better because you can just get a next gen card sooner if you don't spend as much now and current games run pretty well on the 6800, even with my 2800+.

I too am working, but only 8 hours/day. Since I'm hourly as an intern, they don't want me to get time and a half overtime. I probably wouldn't want to work more anyway, since I find it a bit dull, and am making decent money anyway. If only a third of it didn't go to stupid taxes... I have to figure out how these allowances work, because I shouldn't have to pay tax on the first $4000 (I think) of earned income, and it doesn't make sense to get a huge refund next year because I would lose the interest ($100+) on the withholdings.

I don't know how they are nowadays, but SiS has traditionally made pretty bad chipsets. I would stick with a Via, Intel, or nVidia chipset.

Are you sure it is the power supply? Symptoms will be hard drive having trouble spinning up, video not coming on, etc. If you have a generic PSU, it is possibly overrated (lists peak power instead of sustained), or has the rail currents set up i a stupid way.

My Fortron 300W (cuts out at 390W) handles my XP 2800+ and 6800 fine, unless it is warm in the room.

Sounds like the PSU is too weak then.

Sounds like it, especially if it isn't giving enough power for that few amount of components.

Actually, not really. You *can* netboot most computers anymore, and from there you can netinstall Linux. :P

umm.... using dual PSUs for something not designed for it is a Very Bad Thing. Also, if it truely IS running twice as fast, you're going to burn something out very soon. Letting the smoke out is a Very Very Much Worse Thing.

What, you are attributing dual psu's to a 200% speed increase?
