(Free) Windows Garageband Alternative?

I'm looking for some free software like Garageband but for Windows. Anyone know of anything?

I LOVE garageband...it makes it easy to do recording!
I bet there's some sort of free windows alternative.

Ah, I forgot to mention: No Fruity loops. I've tried it :P

It might help if you described what GarageBand is, or rather - what you need from it.

Personally, for audio editing I use the ancient CoolEdit '96 (shareware). That's since become Adobe Audition, but at $349 I don't think that matches your "(free)" specification.

Audacity is free, and I hear good things about it, but I've never used it myself. You could give it a whirl.

EDIT: If you want to compose, Renoise is a good tracker.

I'd second the Audacity recommendation, I personally prefer Adobe Audition, but that doesn't fit your free requirement.

It's nothing like fruityloops or other digital synthesizers though. If that's what he needs..
