I use MSN (7) which is in my opinion is the best, but sometimes you can also find me on IRC
P.s.: You may choose one or two options

AIM only because a lot of my friends use it.
MSN

IRC somewhat, aim a lot. But keep in mind I don't use the actual AIM program, I use trillian. And ChatZilla for IRC.

I don't use any, but in the future I might try IRC. For now I stick on forums.

I use IRC, AIM, MSN, ICQ, and Y!.... But only two programs (mIRC and Trillian). I rarely actually communicate over ICQ and Y!, but I have them connected just in case.

I use AIM and MSN but I run them seperately because for some reason Trillian lags my computer somethin awful
I'd rather be a nobody remembered by someone than a somebody remembered by noone.

Have you tried
Visual IRC? I prefer it to mIRC as it's, well, free. No nag screens = very yes.
