NO!!!!! its zelda for crying out loud. there's like a hundred different stuff i need to keep track of. keys collected, treasure chests open, doors unlocked. there must be a way.

No more than 30 per list element. That could be 2997 flags in a 999-element list, although I hope you don't have that many.

33 actually, but since even numbers (especially powers of 2!) are usually easier to work with, I'd say go with 32.
2^33 = 8589934592
2^32 = 4294967296
0^00 = 1234567890 (did that to align numbers
)

You could actually have up to 46 bits, and I don't see why in this case powers of two - or even numbers are better than any other.
