Perhaps you should be a bit more willing to discuss your ideas and your point of view, then this would've been a good discussion instead of the mudslinging it's become.
And I challenge you to prove us (and I mean tangible reproductable evidence) that we're wrong in our ideas about you. If you make this networking idea a success within the next year and if you can show me that it's fast enough to play a decent game, that you only need a one byte address (even over the Internet) and prove me wrong in everything I've said here, then I'll openly apologize for my disbelief. I bet Andy will be willing to join me on this.

i don't think it will be too hard to understand that http://joepnet.com/hosted/maxcoderz/php ... 9434#29434isn't 'constructive criticism' or 'reasonable discussion' anymore
I had already admitted that that post didn't really add much. But these:
http://joepnet.com/hosted/maxcoderz/php ... 9158#29158
http://joepnet.com/hosted/maxcoderz/php ... 9200#29200
http://joepnet.com/hosted/maxcoderz/php ... 9239#29239
were serious attempts at an open "reasonable discussion". I don't think you'll disagree with me on that. I got a little pissed when (as expected) all I got in return was "So sounds like I should go forward with attempting this? Fair enough."

I realy don't understand what this confrontation is all about. If Kerm wants to waste his time with "useless" ventures and "upload every single piece of crap that comes to his mind", that is his buisness. Why does anyone care? Calculator programming is a hobby, not a profession. He isn't being paid for his programs and please don't tell me you envy his ticalc.org stats. The amusing fact is, that while criticizing Kerm of taking his hobbies too seriously, spending hours on pointless crap, uploading programs that don't work, posing ideas that could never possibly be complished, etc....you reveal your unhealthy absession with calculators.
While I don't share AndySoft's..."enthusiasm" I agree that it's hard to put any confidence in this plan without some concept drawings, working code, or so much as a scribble on a cocktail napkin. We're getting a lot of talk and no walk.
My diet consists of nails, code-stealers, and HP fans.

I think I've been pretty clear what bothers me about Kerm. I'll refer to that instead of posting more mud. But the short version would be what DigiTan said plus that all that "talk" is being accepted as truth by too many people, thus spoiling the "market" and making him a hero. Which obviously annoys me.
And I never really understood why Cemetech is in the conglomerate feed...
I very much agree...CoBB wrote:If that's all you gathered from this topic, it's time to read it again with all your filters turned off for a change.KermMartian wrote:I was just kinda summarizing. w/e

Okay, I've let all prejudice go for about an hour and just read through every single bit of information that Kerm has written about his plans on his forum. Ain't I kind
Anyway, I have lots to say about the matter, and the likelihood of it's completion, but I need to go get some sleep for my exam tomorrow, so I'll keep it to the headlines:
Calc protocol: http://www.geocities.com/kermmartian/pr ... epaper.pdf
Some details on the computer to computer protocol: http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic ... 1044#11044
- There are several people working on this other than Kerm, who all but one seem rather n00b-ish, but determined to make this work
- The "Cemetech backend server" seems to be a PHP script that desktop PC clients (programmed in Java it seems) connect to through HTTP port 80. I would've gone for C/C++/C# in both cases, with a direct TCP connection on another port, but who am I
- It looks like Kerm pays more heed to my words than I thought.
Reason 1 to say that: his protocol is 95% of something I wrote in highschool and uploaded to Ticalc.org somewhere in 2003, with some small changes and two features I left out: Beacon and Resource. I expect Kerm's respons to be "I never read that article", but a man can think what he wants, can't he?
Reason 2 to say that: Two days after I posted this, he posted this on his forum, what was supposed to be a private message.
- http://gcn.cemetech.net/ currently gives a nice "Internal Server Error"
In short; I've gotten a bit more confidence in this project on the one hand. On the other hand I've been provided with confirmation that he's making the mistakes I expected him to make. I'm currently somewhat torn between standing by the side-line and laughing my ass off, or... ehm... offering my service once I have a bit more spare time on my hands... I'll probably go for the first option, since I very much doubt Kerm will accept any more criticism, constructive or otherwise, from me, and I have my hands full with two studies I'm currently attending...
I got stuck with all the boring math I have to do for Computer Science, so I've started looking around a bit. I'm currently doing Biomedical Engineering as a second study for a year to see if it fits me better. One thing's already for certain: it takes up a LOT more time than CS

Timendus: I love when people give me constructive criticism, it's the only way I'm gonna improve my stuff. And the reason I didn't do a direct TCP/IP or UDP script is that I use paid hosting and can't install the scripts necessary to support a TCP-level client. If I did, I would jump on it in a second.
